Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

15th – We’ve added enough quality that even Bruce shouldn’t get us relegated but the slow decline last season and the continued lack of a proper manager along with no home crowds means we have very little advantage over others.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?

Had we upgraded the manager, I’d think we were making progress. As it is it’s a decent window but once again very late with all the new players coming in as the season starts with no pre-season to bed in. Classic NUFC, nothing has really changed.

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

None – first time in my life the fixture release has meant absolutely nothing. We’re a zombie club where no game is more or less relevant than the last.

Who will win the league?

Genuinely think Chelsea should be up there with the business they’ve done. Chelsea

Who is going down?

Villa – hopefully – Fulham – not convinced they’ve made themselves into a PL side; they look the weakest on paper – Sheffield United – nowhere near as good as people think and second season syndrome bound to kick in

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

If I was asked this question a fortnight ago I would have said 16th at best. However, with the new signings I can see United reaching the heady heights of 12th. It ought to be a season where the question of relegation does not arise. I am unconvinced that Steve Bruce and his coaching staff have the capacity to get a squad of players with the ability to make the top ten into it, but I do think that if they stick to the basics of 442/4411 then a relegation-worry free season is possible.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?

I am genuinely happy with the players brought in – they are all very good signings, if the present state of Newcastle United is taken into consideration. This is a club that has been relegated twice in twelve seasons and from its last twelve Premier League campaigns has finished in the top ten on only three occasions and has only broken the 50 points barrier once. I am still a little shocked that the Club has permitted a manager to bring in fourr internationals who also happen to have significant Premier League experience and of whom only one is likely to have any significant sell-on value. This window has gone against the grain of  the model that has been followed by Ashley for years and it has to be a welcome change. Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson only two seasons ago were being mooted for big-money moves to ‘big’ clubs, Jeff Hendrick will bring drive, experience and leadership to the team and Jamal Lewis is definitely an exciting prospect and very much in the mould of the attacking full backs that are very much in fashion at this time. Bruce has done well.

We still need another centre-forward.

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

None. The fact that fans are not yet permitted to attend, that the season only ended a few weeks ago and that it is starting mid-September has thrown any of the usual feelings I would get during pre-season into total disarray (with a decent bit of apathy chucked in). I am sure that will change on Saturday…

Which player will be crucial for us this season?

Callum Wilson. If he gets the service, he will score. If he gets even 10 goals, which is five times as many as Joelinton got last season, then it might be worth an extra 6-10 points over the course of the season. 54 points last season would have meant finishing ninth…we can only dream of such glories, right? Add to that the fact that he can hold the ball up, bring other players into the game, create space, win penalties and lead from the front then he could be worth even more points on the board. The fact is that United played almost all of last season with a player up front who did none of those things.

Which player can you see failing to perform this season?

Not through his talent, but I think Fabian Schar’s days at Newcastle are numbered. It is a shame as he is a good player in the right circumstances but he is clearly not the type of centre half that Bruce rates or likes to work with. He will fail to perform because he won’t be given the opportunity to do so. Or, if he is, it will be filling in for injuries and suspensions, so he will look poor even if he is given the chance to play.

Will Steve Bruce  be here at the end of the season?

Absolutely, even if there is a threat of relegation come March. As long as Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley are at Newcastle, then the only time I could see them dispensing with Bruce is if the Club is relegated and Bruce fails to get the side back up in his first season in the Championship.

Who will win the league?

Man City

Who is going down?

West Brom – Championship squad, scraped up, Bilic is a bag average manager; Aston Villa – stop Jack Grealish, stop Aston Villa. Teams know this now; West Ham – in complete disarray, the fans detest the owners, the squad is talented but unmotivated, the players are unhappy and the manager is well-past his sell by date. Does this sound familiar? Hello, Newcastle United, October 2008!

Many thanks to TF podcast supremo Norman Riley for these answers

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

Certainly no higher than 13th – the squad despite essential recruits is mediocre and will again struggle for goals. Steve Bruce’s coaching, conditioning and tactics are poor and that’s why we’re going nowhere fast right now.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?

Not particularly- I don’t think the first team is at the same level as the one Rafa left despite the money spent

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

At one time I’d have said Man Utd but none now – we’re bottom feeders in this league, don’t have a local rival within a decade of playing in the PL so no fixtures stand out really

Which player will be crucial for us this season?

There’s two – Wilson and Dubravka for all the obvious reasons.

Which player can you see failing to perform this season?

Joelinton – the lad has nothing about him I can see.

Will Steve Bruce  be here at the end of the season?

I’d desperately hope not but if Ashley is still there it will be another mediocre duck egg delighted to put NUFC on his cv regardless of the zombie status of the club under Ashley

Who will win the league?

Man City I think.

Who is going down?

I’d tip Villa, Fulham and West Brom – but Bruce might have us in the mix as well.

Thanks to TF Founder Michael Martin for these answers.

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

12th. I think there’s worst teams than us, especially given the arrival of Wilson and Fraser. Two players that’ll definitely improve us. On Hendrick & Lewis I know very little on them. The aim will be finish above 3 sides again now and I think we’ll definitely do that.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?

Well back in April I was looking forward to all sorts of players coming through the door, but a front 4 of Miggy, Maxi, Wilson and Fraser excites me a bit. Especially Wilson who has looked really good on a couple of occasions when I’ve watched him.

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

I looked for Leeds away hoping it was later than it is. Fulham away being last game is canny. Surely we’re back in by then.

Which player will be crucial for us this season?

Wilson. We need goals. I can’t see us getting away with another season of relying on Shelvey, Clark and Fernández to pop up with the odd goal .

Which player can you see failing to perform this season?

Joelinton. I hope I’m wrong, but I just don’t see anything in the player whatsoever.

Will Steve Bruce  be here at the end of the season?

Probably. He just needs to finish 17th to keep his job.

Who will win the league?

Liverpool

Who is going down?

Burnley, West Brom, Fulham

Many thanks to die hard mag Jack MClane for these answers

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

12th if I’m being optimistic though our history of poor conditioning and injuries could see us finish dramatically lower if we get unlucky with certain players (Wilson, Lascelles, ASM, Dubravka).  Fully fit, we actually have a squad that could finish in the top 10, but there’s a ceiling because of our head-coach’s ability. Clearly a nice guy who’s trying, but he’s a bottom half-manager at best.

*Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?*

In the circumstances, yes. Wilson and Fraser both improve us no end, Lewis is an exciting prospect while Hendrick is solid and gives us competition and further depth. At the time of writing we still need another striker and another centre back.

*Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why? *

Not one fixture, but the run-in given the fact that United will likely be in the bottom third of the table or so.   Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester and then City is the stuff of nightmares before a final two (slightly easier) matches against Sheffield United and Fulham.  We need to be safe by early April or we could well be toast.

*Which player will be crucial for us this season?*

Callum Wilson and Martin Dubravka are the obvious picks, but beyond them; Almiron. Gets us up the pitch, terrifies opponents and draws fouls. Edges it over ASM as he added (more) goals to his game last season. His smile lights up St James’ Park too.

*Which player can you see failing to perform this season?*

Manquillo. Played very well last season when pretty much everyone else (aside from Almiron) regressed. A return to the mean seems sadly likely under Bruce.

*Will Steve Bruce be here at the end of the season?*

Yes, but his Winter transfer window may have a lot to say about that depending on how United start and how the injuries mount up.

*Who will win the league?*

Liverpool. They’re just getting started.

*Who is going down?*

Crystal Palace (in serious trouble if they lose Zaha), Fulham (a yo-yo club), West Brom (limped over the promotion line, and haven’t strengthened enough)

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

13th. It has become our ‘home of mediocrity’. It would’ve been lower without the addition of some proven Premiership quality.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?

I’m happier. I guess it depends where you set the bar. Without these latter forays into the market, we look in real trouble. With them, we look back to being what we usually are. Lower mid table also-rans. I feel a bit of relief, but not much more.

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

I always look to see if we’re home on Boxing Day. As, traditionally it’s a mint day on the hoy with your pals & a match thrown in. Man City away….. Bah.

Which player will be crucial for us this season?

Wilson. Having managed to survive without a striker last season, it’d be nice if our new number 13 turned out to be the real deal. I can visualise a Rondón type effect from him.

Which player can you see failing to perform this season?*

Joelinton. I would like to proved wildly incorrect, but I can’t recall anything of note which he did to justify anything like the fee that was allegedly paid for his services. We know he’s not a number 9, so what else can he bring to the party? I guess we’ll find out.

Will Steve Bruce be here at the end of the season?

Unless Amanda returns for 47th time and actually manages to do the deal, then yeah I’d say he’s safe as houses.

Who will win the league?*

Liverpool, again.

Who is going down?

West Brom, Fulham and then pick any one from about another 4 / 5 teams. We’ll be in the mix, but probably survive in another ‘groundhog day’ of a season. I always think Burnley will struggle, but Ginger Laryngitis always seems to get them well clear. West Ham is not a happy club, and I could see them occupying the third berth.

Thanks to True Faith visionary and preview man Nick Clark.

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

Somewhere around 14th – 16th. I’m not sure we have done that much to make us better than last season though we’ve hopefully added a few goals. Depth in terms of attacking players still very poor and also lacking in consistency.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?

Yes. I’m happy with what we’ve done to date, but think we could do with a little more up top as well as a creative spark in the middle.

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

Fulham away after the cracking day down there last time out. Could never have predicted the same timing of the fixture mind. Also Leeds away, though it now looks likely we won’t be able to attend.

Which player will be crucial for us this season?

Wilson, without a doubt. We are desperate for someone to get a minimum double figure haul in the league. A big ask for him but hopefully he comes up with the goods.

Which player can you see failing to perform this season?

Miguel Almiron. I can see Joelinton being preferred to him to partner Wilson given the price tag and the apparent need for him to play. Wrong decision imo.

Will Steve Bruce  be here at the end of the season?

Depends on whether he can get something out of the players that he failed to get last season. Luck will run out and he can’t hide behind his Rafa tactics argument this time. I think he’ll survive. Just.

Who will win the league?

I’m sticking my neck out and saying Chelsea. Major investment on top of an already strong squad surely gives them a chance.

Who is going down?

Fulham, WBA and Brighton.

Thanks to away day regular Steve Wallwork for the predictions

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

10th – we’ve made some crucial quality additions in problem areas. Wilson will score goals, his link up with Fraser is proven. Lascelles and Fernandez have set up a good partnership at the back and Lewis will provide real balance and a genuine attacking threat from left back.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?

Massively so, although it does make me sad to say that. This summer’s deals are way beyond what k expected from Ashley’s United.

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

Leeds away. Would have loved to make that trip for a PL game. Doesn’t seem likely any of us will be able to go now.

Which player will be crucial for us this season?

Wilson. He is realistically the only striker we have that will score double figures. Dubravka too, of course.

Which player can you see failing to perform this season?

Seems like a harsh question this one. It’s difficult to see how Joelinton can turn his time at NUFC around.

Will Steve Bruce  be here at the end of the season?

Yes.

Who will win the league?

Man City. It’s so difficult to retain the title so think Liverpool will fall just short. Noone else is anywhere near those two.

Who is going down?

Brighton, Fulham and West Ham.

Thanks to TF podcast man Michael Carling for the answers!

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?Once again we don’t have a squad capable of breaching the top 10 and I worry about how much our defence regressed last season. I expect it to regress further.  I can see us finishing around the 14th mark, but I do expect to be in danger of relegation several times during the campaign. We rode our luck far too many times last season for it to be as comfortable again this year.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?I’m very pleased with the signings we’ve made. Most are easy to get excited by. As things stand though, I feel our defence has to improve to compensate for the fact it isn’t as successfully drilled as it once was, and we definitely need a second incoming striker to support Wilson.

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

Given I won’t be going to any games for the foreseeable, I simply looked for our opening fixture and how I could watch it. Really excited for it, because I’m still a football-loving idiot.

Which player will be crucial for us this season?

I can’t really look beyond Martin Dubravka again. He was crucial for our survival last season, and I really hope we don’t suffer too much during these opening weeks of the season while he’s out injured.

Which player can you see failing to perform this season?

Whoever we decide to play right back. I don’t think any of the three options we have (Manquillo, Krafth or Yedlin) are good enough if we want to progress, and opposition teams will certainly look to target that side.

Will Steve Bruce be here at the end of the season?

He probably will whether he deserves it or not. The club isn’t in a strong position right now and any potential takeover isn’t happening in a hurry.

Who will win the league?

I strongly fancy Man City this year. Liverpool have been spectacular the last two seasons, but I fear burnout for them. Chelsea have made some very impressive additions over the summer and will be exciting to watch, but I still don’t see them troubling the current top two.

Who is going down?

I think West Brom are obvious candidates to go back down. They are a team seemingly too good for the Championship, but too poor for the Premier League. Fulham are under threat too. I also worry for Brighton, even though I hold admiration for Graham Potter.

Where will NUFC finish this season and why?

10th/11th – The current squad have finished 10th (12 wins, 39 goals, 44 points) 13th (12 wins, 42 goals, 45 points) & 13th (11 wins, 38 goals, 44 points) in the last 3 seasons since returning back to the Premier League so the squad of players have proven themselves capable of this level of performance and consistency so i’d be expecting a repeat prior to any changes in the squad. The new signings will bring much needed premier league experience in some key positions that have been lacking previously and this i think will be the impetus to push further up the league this year.

Are you happy with NUFC’s Summer business?

Yes, I think it’s been a really good transfer window, these are all players we’ve been linked with in the past and I probably never really saw them as a realistic opportunities (in that they don’t fit the clubs normal transfer policy) so it’s been pleasing to see some of the staunch ideas shelved to bring in some much needed premier league experience and quality with players coming into or in their prime. Lewis is a young and fairly unproven player at this level but flashed enough potential at a really poor Norwich side and contributes at both ends of the pitch so will hopefully come in and become the starting left back for the next decade or so. The Fraser & Wilson deals are potentially huge if they can repeat the success they had together at Bournemouth previously. This is a side that’s averaged a goal a game roughly over the last 3 years so this is a massive key to making any progress, these 2 need to come in and improve the attacking play – i don’t think this will be hard mind given our 2 fancied strikers last year combined for 2 goals all season so pressure wise they won’t really have any internally!

Which fixture did you look for first in the fixture list and why?

Liverpool at Anfield – I’ve got a bit of an affinity with them, my brother supports them, I went to Uni there, as a result alot of my mates from outside the area are Liverpool fans so it’s always a game that we talk about alot anyway and a game i’ve managed to get to more than any other away. The history of the fixture still holds weight too with even mates supporting other clubs taking an interest in it. We’ve not done too badly against them either given their superiority – I was at Anfield for the 2-2 in 2016 where we came back from 2 down as the last positive result we’ve had there & last season saw our goal of the season scored by Willems to take an unfancied lead and then even the home games still can add a bit of excitement – the 3-2 defeat in 2019 was still a really good game and a night game where the St James atmosphere was buzzing!

Which player will be crucial for us this season?

It’s got to be Callum Wilson. There’s a number of regulars you can point to who are important but they always pull out the performances to get us to the level’s we’ve witnessed but goals have been hard to come by. Rondon & Perez chipped in with 11 & 12 respectively in our best scoring season to date but neither were prolific and didn’t contribute the whole season that year for various reasons – last year was a shambles at times, not just for the lack of goals but the overall play at times, we were like a headless chicken without a focal point last year and it took Andy Carroll to get that presence up top which will have been a concern given his fitness and the fact he’s way past his best. Gayle came back from the restart in good form and started to show glimpses but an untimely injury will have forced the club’s hand to go and get Wilson and he’s capable of doing more than Rondon or Perez – returns of 8, 14 & 8 over the last 3 years isn’t anything special but this was for a really inconsistent Bournemouth team who would be it seemed pushing for Europe at one stage and then in a relegation battle the next. He’s coming into a settled, experienced and most importantly consistent team that will keep us in games and then it’ll be his job to nick that winning goal or 2.

Which player can you see failing to perform this season?

Obvious answer here is Joelinton but hopefully the pressure will be off now we’ve got Wilson and he can find a way to contribute to the team. I don’t really worry about any of the individuals – they are all lads capable of a duff game here and there but they all work hard for the team and find ways to contribute and as a group are disciplined and can hide some of the weaknesses as a result. Dubravka had a few errors last season and is starting to become more prone it appears over the last couple years but then was the top shot stopper in the league and still produced some big displays to keep us in games. Almiron is probably the player i’m not sure on – he’s got great dribbling ability and has started to find the net, getting 8 in all comps last year but he’s still not creating as many chances as I think he’s capable of, the introduction of Fraser will probably see him played as a support striker or at least more centrally which will help him, he doesn’t have the pace at this level to beat a man on the outside but still has attributes that should lead to a much better output than he’s given us so far and he’s got a great engine on him to keep trying. I think a repeat output of 4 goals and 2 assists as per last term would be disappointing but I could see it happening again if some things don’t click for Miggy – fingers crossed a proper striker will help him!

Will Steve Bruce be here at the end of the season?

Yes – I can’t see us getting relegated primarily because of the squad that’s been assembled before him and the character of the team and then (whether you want to credit him or others) we’ve added some quality to the group which can only improve things. It’s been horrible football to watch at times but the hierarchy couldn’t care less about that, it’s about results. You’ve got a really good fighting spirit in this team, I don’t think any of the new players will come in to disrupt that and so we’ll always be in games and scrapping despite some shortcomings in ability of some players but we saw last season we’re capable of getting results despite not playing well. Bruce must do better and there’s no excuses now (well maybe the injuries and the short preseason etc), he’s got everything he could ask for players wise, this is probably the best squad he’ll have managed in his career so his best opportunity to prove he can still do it at this level. He’s in a pretty safe seat in terms of pressure and involvement from above, they will let him get on with the job and It’ll only be a threat of relegation that sees him ousted and I don’t think that’ll happen.

Who will win the league?

Man City but I think it will be much closer than last year although not by a point like the year before. They’ve lost David Silva who will be a big miss and i’m not sure Ake is the answer to all their defensive nightmares, he might even add a few of his own, but they’ve got the best squad and still play the best football in the league on their day, which is most days. Kevin De Bruyne has been one of the best chance creators the Prem has ever seen so they will score goals for fun no matter who’s on the end of it – Aguero should be back fit this season and if he is, expect him to bang them to the Title. Liverpool appear to have been on an emotional comedown since securing their first title. Their play isn’t as dynamic as it was earlier last year, they are now making defensive errors which had been eradicated and was the strength of the team for the last 2 years but maybe they are too focused on attack, primarily aimed at their wingbacks, that they leave opportunities for teams to hurt them and Van Dijk still doesn’t have a settled starting CB – Gomez is still learning and makes mistakes (see Iceland pen). I still expect them to challenge but the standards they set over the last 2 years which saw them win CL & Prem will have been draining on them and I was surprised to see them pick up and keep that momentum going for so long last year, but once it’s gone it’s hard to get that back. Chelsea have strengthened but they have their own defensive woes and it’ll be interesting to see how Lampard’s buccaneering style of play will last over the course of a season, they are one of the better teams to watch as they are open as they are good – this season might be too soon but they are building a team who will be challenging before long. Man U don’t have a settled back 5 so they’ve got no chance, i think i’d take our back 5 over theirs at the minute.

Who is going down?

Fulham, West Brom & Vile. Vile have splashed big on potential rather than proven ability opting for Watkins over Wilson – it could work out but he’s only been a prolific striker for one season and at a lower level where we’ve seen what Dwight can do and has struggled at this level. He was also playing for a Brentford team who were free flowing and created loads of chances, Grealish is capable but teams will be better prepared for him this year so i don’t see him being as impactful in games as he was last year, he’s a quality player but we’ve seen ourselves with Max, when you’ve only got 1 plan, teams at this level will do everything to negate this or atleast minimise his impact. The rest of the team was a team that should have been relegated last year and got away with some fortunate results to stay up by the skin of their teeth, i don’t see them repeating. Fulham came up the hard way, they will learn from past mistakes but I don’t see this experience transitioning into anything that would help them stay up – they know what not to do but still need to work out what to do – will be interesting to see how Mitrovic goes this season, he’s still got that petulance about him but we’ll see if he’s matured his game to something that will produce at this level – he was young and had a lot of pressure at NUFC and it just didn’t work out. West Brom tried their best to drop into that playoff scrap but managed to make it out – they are the yoyo club of the Prem and I expect them to drop down again, the gap in quality will prove too much, Premier League teams pull away each year, especially when the best talent moves up and I don’t see anything in that West Brom team that would suggest to me they will stay up.
