United finally completed the signing of Allan Saint-Maximin from Nice for a reported £18m though the fee may increase with other parts of the deal involving appearances etc. The 22-year-old Parisian of Haitian descent will wear the No.10 shirt. He was spotted having his medical at Benton yesterday and coverage of the transfer is widely covered in today’s media – click here for The Mail as an example.
Also coming through the door yesterday was the 25-year-old Dutch left-sided defender Jetro Willems who has come to United on a season long loan arrangement from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. Willems grew up in Rotterdam. Whilst in Holland he turned out for Spartaan ’20, Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven.
Those of you who have been watching carefully will have clocked that Man U were successful in their bid of £80m for Leicester’s England central defender, Harry Maguire. Previous reports suggested that this might have needed to happen before the Old Trafford club allowed Axel Tuanzebe to join United on a permanent or loan deal. Leicester City are now in the market for a commanding central defender. Hmm.
The Star – click here – have raised the potential of some players leaving United and the first one potentially out of the door is Dwight Gayle who is interesting Leeds. That would appear on the face of it to be a good move for both the Elland Road outfit and the lad himself. Were Gayle to move on for a decent fee it is speculated that this might mean there is some potential in new deals being funded partly from that money – some have speculated making space on the payroll could allow Andy Carroll to return to Barrack Road. We’ll see.
There are plenty other players surplus to requirements with Rolando Aarons, Achraf Lazaar possibly expected toleave at least on loan deals. The same is potentially true of Jack Colback though his wages are likely to prevent him getting a permanent move in the last year of a contract out of all proportion to his contribution. Perhaps United might look at part-funding his wages etc.
Whether there will be a sting in the tail of a big money sale of a Dubravka, Lascelles or Longstaff in the last week of the transfer window is obviously something that cannot be ruled out despite what Bruce or Ashley says. We have heard all of that stuff before.
