Steve Bruce has been confirmed as Head Coach at Newcastle United and his first interview, to NUFC TV, so hardly an inquisition. He said:

“I know in some peoples’ eyes, I’m not Rafa and I know there are big shoes to fill but believe me, I’ll give it everything I possibly can and hopefully I prove the doubters wrong. The easy thing for me to say would have been no. But at my stage of life and career – and back a few years ago, I regretted it. That lingered around me for years when Sir Bobby left. So to be given the opportunity again – it’s something simply I had to take. I had to grasp it – I knew it would be difficult. As I said the easy thing would to have been to say no but I just hope that people show the respect which you obviously only gain by getting a results and doing the job, but hopefully that will go hand in hand.”

Well, in everybody’s eyes he isn’t Rafa and his record and standing within the game is nothing like that of Benitez. He has accepted terms that were unacceptable to an elite coach and we all know how that will pan out because we have been here before with Pardew and McClaren. As Shaka Hislop has told ESPN Steve Bruce “doesn’t hold a candle” to Rafa Benitez.

There was also some blurt about United being his Dad’s club … blah-blah-blah but little of that is washing now with supporters who are bitter and cynical after twelve years of Mike Ashley.

As Alan Shearer noted however, he will only have himself to blame because he knows exactly what he is getting into and he has picked his side – he is Mike Ashley’s man now.
