Dubravka – 7 – Don’t remember him having anything to do all night. Yes we conceded but he can’t be blamed for that. Looked solid for most parts and he’ll be happy with his performance.
Trippier – 10 – My word. Absolutely fucking brilliant from start to finish. It’s rare I give a 10 to a defender who doesn’t keep a clean sheet but I’ll make an exception on this occasion. I firmly believe we’d have drawn this game without him tonight. Easily the best fullback I’ve ever seen in my 27 years supporting this club. He was phenomenal – and what a goal to match.
Lascelles – 7– I’ve been extremely critical of him as of late, and deservedly so. I didn’t think he should have started this game but, fair play, he proved me wrong. Kept their forward players quiet and got us back in it just before the break with a well taken header that led to our equaliser. Would I play him against Villa? No. I still don’t think he’s good enough. One swallow doesn’t make a Summer.

Schär – 7 – Another quality game coming off the back of his Leeds masterclass. Richarlison is a nightmare to play against and he handled him well. When Fede is back fit he has to partner him.
Targett – 8 – What a class debut. And how much better do our centre halves look with quality fullbacks? He’s got everything this lad – composure, time on the ball, positivity going forward. He’s streets ahead of Jamal Lewis and a solid addition to a team in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.
Shelvey – 8 – Work rate was exceptional from start to finish. He looks fitter than I’ve ever seen him in a black and white shirt, and that’s all down to Howe. Right now he’s undroppable. He has to play alongside Bruno on Sunday but that means Joelinton has to be dropped.
Joelinton – 7 – Another solid game in the middle of the park but my god he has no idea what to do inside the penalty area. As much as I love what he’s been doing recently it doesn’t make sense to persist with him over a world class central midfielder. Bruno will come in on Sunday and it might just be at the expense of his fellow Brazilian (unless Howe decides to drop the 4-3-3 and play them both).
“I love @trippier2. He is without question the best right-back we’ve had at Newcastle United while I’ve been going, and that is 51 years this year. The lad is a force of nature.” #NUFC

Willock – 7 – He had his moments but overall didn’t do much in an attacking sense on the night. Saying that, he isn’t a central midfielder. We have to play him as a 10 and change the formation; otherwise we are going to waste such an incredible talent.
Fraser – 9 – The best game he’s had this season. Had his hand in two goals and finally looks like a player ready to contribute with the attacking returns we all know he’s got in his locker. I’ve always said he needs a run in the team, and he’ll only get better from here.
Maximin – 8 – So many fans have been calling for him to be dropped in recent weeks for his (supposed) unselfish play. Tonight he silenced his critics. He gave everything for the shirt and was the absolute consummate team player. He is so important to this club. He is a class player and there is huge pressure on him now Wilson is out for the season, but I have no doubt he will still be the man to keep us up.
Wood – 5 – It looks like Howe is using him as a decoy for attacks around him as he just isn’t getting anywhere near the goal. He held the ball up well enough and did okay. He just needs that first goal, but I just can’t see where it’s going to come from.
James Lynch – @JamesLynch88
Willock score is miles off. He excelled this match and he has finally found his position in the team.
Very harsh on Willock. He’s been poor this season but was exceptional driving forward last night. Drove forward to win the corner for the equaliser and also for the second goal, taking it off Alli and driving forward. Best game of the season and probably our 2nd or 3rd best player last night IMO.
This is so what I think to. I have watched the match 4 times now and this is my view:
-Willock: was good through the whole game, except for 1 bad loss of ball in the 1st half. He is our only true box to box midfielder and he is always in or around the opposition box. He also worked hard defensively.
-Shelvey: was at fault for their goal, making a stupid tackle from behind on a player going nowhere. Could have been a red as its from behind and he goes through the player. Was mainly at fault for Schär’s yellow card to. It was Shelvey playing a bad pass and losing the ball that stsrted their counter, which forced Schär to chase Richarlison. It could have easily been given a red card for that to on another day!
All in all Shelvey (who is a passmaster according to some) had about 6 or 7 ball losses or bad judgements which would hsve been punished against better opposition. In my view he has to be dropped for Bruno out of the 3 that started, because he is never ever gonna dictate play and boss games from midfield!
