Player Ratings – Spurs(h)

Darlow – 5 – Didn’t make any glaring errors but must have been fuming with the shambolic defending in front of him.

Manquillo – 5 – Probably our best defender on the day but there was very little to choose from.  Great assist for Wilson’s opener but let himself down by playing Kane onside to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

Lascelles – 2 – A dreadful display from the club captain.  He was absolutely awful.  He has regressed so much under Bruce it’s frightening and signing a new centre half in January should be our number one priority.

Clark – 3 – Looked off the pace and made a few wild decisions. Couldn’t cope with Son and had a nightmare of an afternoon.  Caught ball watching as Kane notched his first league goal of the season.  Booked for a reckless challenge in the second half.

Ritchie – 4 – Offensively fine but he is never a left back in a million years, so why does he keep getting played here? Has to take responsibility for a sloppy clearance in the build up to Son’s goal.

Hayden – 4 – Put a shift in but ultimately isn’t good enough at this level.  Was totally overrun in midfield and couldn’t keep up with the excellent Ndombele.  Booked for a cynical challenge on Moura in the second half.

Longstaff –5 – Looked well up for it from the get go but ultimately went missing as the game progressed.  Picked up a booking in the first half and was hooked on the hour mark.

Willock – 5 – Played his part in the opener but didn’t do anything else of note. Doesn’t seem to be fully fit and looks a shadow of the player we saw last season, but I’m sure under a new manager we’ll get to see the best of him again. Really needs a goal to lift his confidence.

Maximin – 6 – Easily our biggest threat with his direct running and pacey dribbling.  Perhaps could have done better with an effort he blazed over in the second half, but on the whole did enough to come out with a positive mark.

Joelinton – 6 – Getting better by the week and his hold up play is really coming on leaps and bounds.  Is much more effective as a left winger, as he bullied Emerson Royal at times.  Battled for the cause and did his best to link up with Wilson. However, he did pick up a stupid yellow card in second-half stoppage time.

Wilson – 7 – Gave absolutely everything and at times was forced to do it all on his own.  Exceptional movement from our number nine for the opener which nearly took the roof off St. James’ Park and sent the supporters into euphoric celebrations.

Shelvey (60 for Longstaff) – 0 –Sent off after only being on the pitch for 20 minutes.  A gutless, petulant display from the midfielder.

Murphy (77 for Willock) –5 – Didn’t get much time to shine but has to take credit for the well taken free kick leading up to Dier’s own goal.

Fraser (77 for Wilson) – 4 – Had a shot late on but wasn’t given enough time to impact the game.
