Well we’re approaching that time of the year where it’s all coming to an end.  Sadly not Steve Bruce’s tenure at the club or that pesky Covid-19 that’s keeping us all away from our beloved St James Park. No, I refer to the crazy period known as the January transfer window! But who or what does Newcastle United need?   We’ll all have our views and I’m sure they’ll differ from Mag to Mag but here are some suggestions that have flashed across my mind:

We’re crying out for a midfielder who can actually run! We seem to have a collection of players who would struggle to do the 100m sprint in about 90 mins and boy did it show against Leeds. Whilst they possess other abilities such as a great range of passing from Jonjo & unlimited tenacity in Hayden, it’s simply not enough. We need a player that can join the attack, that can arrive in the box and gives us an outlet for when we break or when Wilson holds the ball up & doesn’t need to squint to see his midfield camped on the edge of their own halfway line.   “Schteve” McClaren didn’t do much right during his time at the club but what would a signing like a Gini Wjinaldum do for us right now? All of the above! I’m not sure how far reaching old Bruce’s scouting team goes? But I’d be stunned if we could strike gold twice! We’re 33-1 to sign Dele Alli which is mental yes I know but a player that could fill that hole & one who needs a move to try and get on the England plane this summer for the Euros. Perhaps a more realistic move may be Todd Cantwell from Norwich? He looked very good in the PL and I was quite surprised he didn’t make the move to a club back in top flight. He’d certainly offer more than what we have at the moment going forward.

.An actual right back! Manquilo being the option at the start of the season was moved out of position. Yedlin clearly isn’t in the managers plans & I don’t think there’s much of a future shoe horning Murphy in there. It doesn’t work and a half decent winger will have him on toast. So who could or should we get? The first choice for me would be Max Aarons, like Cantwell  he looked very good in PL last year and was even linked with Barcelona before the window shut! He’d offer pace going forward as well as being able to defend which again is an upgrade on what we have. The second choice? May be controversial but it’s a familiar name… James Tavenier. He’s developed in to a very decent footballer in his years away from NUFC and at 29 should be at the peak of his powers. Like Aarons he’d offer pace and the ability to get up and down the line but in addition to this he offers fantastic delivery from set pieces & as a wing back a real eye for goal too as his record (admittedly in an inferior league) states. In addition to these two much needed signings there’s welcome talk about Jetro Willems returning which I’m certain the majority of us would be happy with. Jamal Lewis has been OK and as a young player can only get better but having Jetros experience & legs up and down that left flank would be a huge benefit to the squad as well as hopefully a few more Liverpool style rankers.

As far as strikers go providing we wrap Wilson in cotton wool we’ll be fine but the return of Gayle will provide us with the cover needed if the unthinkable happens to big Callum and hopefully get us to the end of the season. I would say we’re well stocked at centre back too although I feel Schar could be on his bike so we may bring in another body to fill his squad just as long as it’s not Phil bloody Jones then we shouldn’t be any worse off.

There’s still some appealing yet risky free transfers around that could add experience and quality to the squad with Wilshere & Sturridge being two that come to mind but these 2 may never return to anything like what they were which could be the reason they’re still club-less.

Of course there’s every likelihood that Ashley will give Bruce nothing in January and the best we’ll be able to do is get a couple of very good loan signings in hopefully in those key 2 areas in Midfield & at Right back. Time will tell & we’ll have to see if the shops are open or closed again in January.
